fromNEMNET

Whether you're pursuing a teaching, administrative, or school leadership position, what you do after applying can be just as important as the application itself.
At NEMNET, we encourage candidates to take an active role in managing their job search. Staying organized, following up professionally, and maintaining communication can help you stand out in a competitive hiring environment.
Here are seven important steps to take after applying for your next opportunity.
1. Confirm That Your Application Was Received
When: Within 2 business days of applying
Don't assume your application was successfully received simply because you clicked "Submit."
Check your email for a confirmation from the employer or its applicant tracking system. Be sure to check your spam or junk folder as well. If you haven't received confirmation within two business days, consider contacting the school's human resources or recruitment office to verify receipt.
NEMNET TIP: Keep a record of every position you apply for, including the school name, position title, application date, and contact information.
2. Follow Up and Reaffirm Your Interest
When: 7–10 business days after applying
If you haven't heard from the employer, a brief, professional follow-up can demonstrate continued interest and initiative.
Your message should be courteous, concise, and focused on reaffirming your enthusiasm for the opportunity.
SAMPLE FOLLOW-UP MESSAGE:
Dear [Hiring Manager],
I recently submitted my application for the [Position Title] at [School Name] and wanted to reaffirm my interest in the opportunity.
I remain enthusiastic about the possibility of contributing to your school community and would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience and qualifications align with your needs.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
[Your Name]
NEMNET TIP: Respect the school's hiring timeline. If an employer has provided a specific timeline or requested no follow-up communications, follow those instructions.
3. Prepare for the Interview Before You're Invited
When: Begin within the first week of applying
Don't wait for an interview invitation to begin preparing.
Review the position description, identify your most relevant accomplishments, and prepare examples that demonstrate your experience and potential contributions.
Think about how you would answer questions related to your educational philosophy, classroom or institutional leadership, student engagement, collaboration, and professional growth.
Prepare thoughtful questions of your own. Remember, the interview is also your opportunity to determine whether the school and its community are a good fit for you.
NEMNET TIP: Practice articulating not only what you've accomplished, but also the value you can bring to the school and its students.
4. Keep NEMNET Informed When You Secure an Interview
When: Within 48 hours of receiving an interview invitation
Congratulations! Securing an interview is an important milestone.
If you've been invited to interview for a position discovered or applied for through NEMNET, please notify our team.
Share the school's name, position title, and anticipated interview date.
Keeping NEMNET informed helps us better understand candidate progress, track recruitment outcomes and identify opportunities to support members of our career network.
NEMNET TIP: After your interview, send a personalized thank-you message to your interviewer within 24 hours. Reaffirm your interest and reference something meaningful from your conversation.
5. Stay Engaged Throughout the Selection Process
When: Following each interview and throughout the hiring process
Many schools conduct multiple rounds of interviews before making a final hiring decision.
Stay responsive to employer communications, promptly provide any requested materials, and remain professional throughout the process.
If the school provides a decision timeline, make a note of it. If that date passes without an update, consider sending a polite follow-up after two or three business days. Continue exploring other opportunities while awaiting a decision.
NEMNET TIP: Don't put your entire job search on hold because one opportunity looks promising. Keep your options open until you've received and accepted a formal offer.
6. You've Been Hired! Share the Good News With NEMNET
When: Within 48 hours of accepting an offer
Congratulations on your new position!
If you've accepted an offer from a school or organization for a position discovered or applied for through NEMNET, we'd love to hear your good news.
Please notify NEMNET and share the name of the school, your new position title, and anticipated start date.
Why is this important?
Your success helps us measure the impact of our career network, strengthen our partnerships with schools, and continue creating meaningful career opportunities for educators and school leaders.
NEMNET TIP: Once you've accepted an offer, update your NEMNET profile and employment status to reflect your new position.
Remember: Your Job Search Is a Process, Not an Event.
The most successful job seekers understand that applying for a position is only one part of the recruitment journey.
Preparation, persistence, professionalism and communication can make a meaningful difference.
At NEMNET, we're committed to helping educators and school leaders navigate that journey with greater confidence, access and opportunity.
