As the saying goes: You don’t get what you don’t ask for!
At NEMNET, we recognize that negotiating your salary isn’t just about money, it’s about knowing your value and advocating for it confidently and respectfully. Whether you’re a classroom teacher, administrator or staff member, the tips below are designed to help you navigate salary conversations with clarity, professionalism, and purpose.
Negotiation is a skill and like any skill, it can be learned, practiced and improved.
1. Research Salary Ranges
Before beginning any negotiation, research the typical salary range for teachers/administrators/coaches in your subject area, experience level and region. Salaries vary not just state to state but school to school, especially in the independent sector where compensation often correlates with endowment and financial health. Know your market!
2. Highlight Your Qualifications
Emphasize your education, certifications, years of experience and relevant accomplishments. Share specific ways you’ve contributed to student/organozation growth, curriculum development, DEI initiatives, or school leadership. Let your qualifications tell a story.
3. Know Your Worth
You bring a unique perspective and skill set to a school community. Be confident in articulating that value. Avoid underestimating your impact, specially in environments where representation and inclusion matter.
4. Prepare Your Talking Points
Go into the conversation prepared. List the points you want to raise, including:
5. Be Patient and Professional
Negotiations often take time and may involve multiple stakeholders. Be patient. Maintain a calm and professional tone throughout all interactions. Avoid emotionally charged language. Lead with facts, evidence and thoughtful reasoning.
6. Consider Benefits and Perks
Salary is only one part of total compensation. Consider:
Negotiation can include these elements as part of a holistic package.
7. Be Flexible
If a school/organization can’t meet your salary ask, explore creative alternatives:
Flexibility shows maturity and helps keep dialogue open.
8. Practice Your Negotiation Skills
Role play with a mentor or trusted peer. Practicing aloud helps build confidence, refine your tone and prepare you to respond to common counterpoints. Preparation = Poise and Power.
9. Be Reasonable and Realistic
Your ask should reflect your value and the financial landscape of the school. Consider the school’s size, budget and market trends. Assertive doesn’t mean inflexible. Be sure strike a balance.
10. Have a Backup Plan
Not every negotiation results in agreement.
Prepare mentally and logistically for other options, whether that means seeking part-time income, exploring other roles or simply setting boundaries on what you will accept.
Final Thoughts
Negotiating your salary is not just about dollars, it’s about dignity, equity and ensuring your work is valued appropriately. Schools/Organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of attracting and retaining educators and administrators from diverse backgrounds.
Own your value. Ask for what's fair. Walk into the conversation with clarity and courage.
