Job Description/Responsibilities:
The Spence School announces a search for a Middle School Dean of Students to begin on July 2, 2018.

The Spence School Middle Division seeks a dynamic school person and educator with a vision for student life for the position of MS Dean of Students. This individual will know how to lead with purpose and passion, and cares deeply about student development. They understand that individual identity development is central to a strong education, and will respond to the challenges presented by Spence’s diverse student population.  They will be prepared to collaborate with leadership to reimagine and strengthen student programs, systems, and structures.  Proactive and collaborative leadership will be hallmarks of their practice in the delivery of services to support the students’ academic achievement, personal and social development.

This administrative position reports directly to the Division Head of Middle School (Grades 5-8) and to the Director of Institutional Equity and Public Purpose.

Minimum Degree: Ed. M
Certification Required: Yes
Minimum Experience: 3-5 Years

• Divisional developmental expertise
• Understanding of the independent school academic environment and the interface between academic and student affairs
• Passion for moral, character, and academic development of MS students
• Demonstrated commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds
• Shown track-record of effective practices with both individual and group advising
• Ability to work independently and tolerate ambiguity
• Delight in middle school students
• Strong communication skills with students, parents, faculty
• Work with MS Division Director to ensure the continuity of access and belonging within and across Lower, Middle and Upper School
• Work with the Director of Institutional Equity and Public Purpose to develop and implement the MS service and equity co-curriculum
• Lead the MS grade-level deans in co-curricular programming for the development of personal, emotional, social, and intellectual integrity of all students
• Work with the Health Department and the school counselors to develop a coherent and developmental scope and sequence for student self-care and self-knowledge
• Oversee safety and security measures for MS students
The MS Dean will be expected, as are most administrators at Spence, to teach one class in their division, to be determined based on their interest and the needs of the departments.
