Stephen Gaynor School
EMPLOYER PROFILE
____________________________________________________________________________

Stephen Gaynor School is an independent, special education school for bright children with learning differences ages three to fourteen. Founded in 1962, Gaynor provides a rich, rigorous, and nurturing environment in which students gain the skills and confidence necessary to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. What truly distinguishes Gaynor is its individualized curriculum, designed to fit the learning styles of each and every child, paced at his/her level.

Stephen Gaynor School recently expanded to a two-building campus totaling nearly 80,000 square feet. The expansion has allowed the school to grow both academically and in the arts, reaching more children with learning differences.
Gaynor is known for attracting outstanding faculty and practitioners and is a leading special education school in New York City.

THE GAYNOR DIFFERENCE: UNLOCKING EACH STUDENT’S POTENTIAL
Gaynor realizes that every child is unique and each child learns in a different way. For this reason, we develop an individualized educational program with multi-sensory techniques that fits the learning style of each and every child and is paced at his/her level.

SPECIALISTS
We have a team of specialists who provide support for our students. When needed, Gaynor specialists join a child in class, work with him/her one-on-one, or in small group instruction.  Our team-based approach allows specialists and expert faculty to collaborate, ensuring each child’s needs are met. Gaynor specialists include:

• Speech/Language
• Reading
• Math
• Occupational Therapy

ACADEMICS
An academically challenging curriculum covering age-appropriate content fosters success for each child.

• Gaynor Writing Program, developed in conjunction with Dr. Judith Hochman
• Reading curriculum, based on the Orton–Gillingham approach and individualized to meet each student’s needs. Gaynor’s Orton-Gillingham Instructional Program has been officially accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. As such, we are an Organizational Member of the Academy and a member of the Academy’s Council of Accredited Programs, one of only two schools in the New York metropolitan area to be so certified.
• Math curriculum draws from many programs, including the Singapore Math and Stern Structural Arithmeticprograms

THE TOTAL APPROACH
Gaynor provides a well-rounded education.

In addition to our academic program, we encourage students’ passions to help them realize success outside the classroom. This helps build self-confidence, allowing them to become more confident learners inside the classroom. Areas of focus include:

• Art
• Music
• Athletics
• Digital Photography
• Drama
• Technology
