St. Francis is an Independent, non-denominational, progressive, co-ed, Preschool–12th gradeschool located on two campuses: Goshen (Preschool-8th) and Downtown (9th-12th) with approximately 500 students. St. Francis School is characterized by personal attention, small class sizes, diversity, dedication to student voice, commitment to community service, student-centricextracurriculars, and outstanding teachers who are dedicated to their subject areas and totheir students. Inside and outside the classroom, the atmosphere at St. Francis School is oneof joy that also prepares students successfully for college and for life. The school philosophyis based on the Progressive school movement founded by John Dewey and Francis Parker inthe early 1900s as a response to the assembly line, “one-size-fits-all” school model.Progressive schools, on the other hand, believe that students achieve milestones at different rates and therefore that education should be customized for individual students as much as possible. Progressive schools like St. Francis are student-centered, community service-minded, diverse, experiential, and participatory; they require students to be fully engaged participants in the learning process. Our mission statement is: St. Francis School cultivates a joyful, compassionate, intellectual community that celebrates individuality and inspires independent thinking for life.
Approximately 50% of our students receive financial aid to attend the school (national average is around 21%). We are committed to enrolling a student body that reflects the metro Louisville area, and our financial aid grants are a tangible demonstration of that commitment.
The Downtown Campus (grades 9-12) is in the heart of an urban area, which becomes an extension of our campus. The Goshen Campus (Preschool - 8th grade) is on 64 acres 20 miles outside downtown, providing gardens, fields and woods for students to roam. The progression from rural to urban fits our Progressive philosophy, as it reflects the different environments that are right for students at different ages.
