SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Description: 11-month, full-time, staff position


Salary Range: $68,000 – $73,000


The School Counselor has demonstrated interest in working with a diverse population of adolescents and families in a school setting. This individual plays a vital role in supporting students’ social-emotional adjustment and personal development. They provide individual support to help students navigate personal challenges. The counselor also contributes to broader school-wide initiatives related to mental health, social-emotional well-being, and belonging.


Essential Functions

  • Provide triage care for emerging and ongoing emotional health issues and make referrals to outside clinicians for assessment and treatment planning.

  • Coordinate communication with external mental health providers to support school-based student intervention and support.

  • Provide short-term school-based social and emotional counseling for CSW students.

  • Provide consultation and education regarding adolescent mental health, learning, and developmental issues for students, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians.  

  • Oversee, help coordinate, and support the Health Team and Student Life Office by working in support of the Peer Mentorship Program, Advisory Program, and/or participate in the PACE program to be determined by the Director of Community Health & Counseling.

  • Assist with WeARE Wednesday and Health Class Curriculum as needed. 

  • Work in collaboration with and in support of the Student Life Office.


Other Functions:

  • Serve as a member of the Health Team.

  • Contribute programming for topics about social-emotional development and health for the Advising curriculum. 

  • Liaise with the Skills Center and Academic Office in support of student learning.

  • Serve as a resource for advisors with individual student issues, family matters, and health-related programmatic modifications.. 

  • Support school-based initiatives related to wellness programming and community engagement as assigned by the Director of Community Health & Counseling.

  • Chaperone responsibilities in the weekend activities program.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Health & Counseling or the Assistant Head of School for Student Life.



Physical Requirements:

  • Dexterity for office machine/supply operation, including but not limited to computers, telephones, copy machines, and printers. 

  • Stooping, bending, and reaching for files or supplies, occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds, and sitting or standing for extended periods are common.

  • Ability to navigate stairs and uneven terrain.

School Description:

The Cambridge School of Weston, founded in 1886, provides a progressive education that emphasizes deep learning and meaningful relationships through a dynamic program that inspires students to discover who they are and what their contribution is to their school, their community, and the world. Located 12 miles from Boston, we are a day and boarding high school community of approximately 340 students. Our module system forms the basis of the educational program, allowing us to offer more than 300 classes. All classes meet for 75-to-90 minutes each day, taught over five-week modules. Our pedagogy advocates active, experiential learning within a curriculum designed to accommodate the interests and experiences of individual students. Qualifications:

Skills and Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree or higher, as well as licensure in counseling, social work, or a related field.


Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a counseling setting, particularly in a school-based role.

  • Demonstrated interest and motivation in being fully integrated into student and residential life.

  • Excellent communication, listening, mediation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.

  • Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to multitask and prioritize workload.

  • Ability to make decisions and act with the highest ethical standards, appropriate boundaries, discretion, and sound judgment.

Preferred Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc.: 

  • Current and active license in Massachusetts (LCSW or LMHC) preferred.

  • Understanding of mandated reporting laws in Massachusetts.

  • Ability to obtain a Massachusetts driver's license before the start date.

  • Previous school experience working with neurodivergent students and classroom experience preferred.
