Job Description/Responsibilities:

The high school mathematics teacher is responsible for delivering an American math curriculum to students in an engaging, stimulating, and effective manner, using varied instructional strategies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to promote inquiry-based learning, in which students work both collaboratively and independently to create new knowledge, share materials, problem solve, and discuss mathematical concepts. The mathematics teacher will plan and deliver courses, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, differentiation and basic integration, data analysis and statistics, as well as foundation and Advanced Placement-level courses.


Summary of duties

  • Teach five sections of high school mathematics across Grades 9 to 12, or four sections of mathematics plus an advisory class

  • Prepare, coordinate, and plan the curriculum with other members of the math department, and liaise with other departments where appropriate

  • Exhibit knowledge of current trends, pedagogy, research, and topics of importance in mathematics education by applying it in the classroom and sharing it with teachers on a departmental and school-wide basis

  • Monitor and evaluate students’ progress, prepare for parent conferences, grade assessments, and complete report cards, etc.

  • Demonstrate facility using technological tools, such as spreadsheets, graphing calculators, dynamic geometry software, and web browsers as an integral part of mathematics instruction

  • Take responsibility for the safety and well-being of all students, while delivering an engaging and challenging syllabus

  • Organize and participate in field trips to facilitate active learning

  • Participate in regular, purposeful mathematics pedagogy meetings around standards-based education and in mathematics professional development sessions

  • Provide continuity of the students’ educational experience to allow a a smooth transition from/to the US education system

  • Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership, and leadership of extracurricular activities

  • Perform other duties within the scope, spirit, and purpose of the job, as requested by the High School Principal

Minimum Experience: 3-5 Years

Essential qualifications/experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline

  • Substantive successful teaching in a school setting, with substantive experience teaching mathematics

  • A creative, student-centred mathematics teaching philosophy, with an ability to teach from an interdisciplinary lens

  • Experience and ability to teach multiple levels of classes from Algebra to Calculus required

  • Experience and expertise in Statistics and Data Science preferred

  • Experience and commitment to collaborative working in a team-focused environment

  • Significant recent professional development germane to the position

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Commitment to and facility with integration of technology in the service of student learning

  • Experience in a school with a similar teaching philosophy to that of ASL, which employs comparable teaching methods and standards-based curricula, or to have received training that will adequately prepare the candidate for the American style of teaching required by the School

  • Experience teaching an American curriculum and familiarity with research-based best practices in American pedagogy

  • Experience with differentiating instruction to meet the learning needs of all students

  • Willingness to contribute to school life and activities in additional ways through coaching, advising, and special projects

  • Ability to support and nurture the school-home partnership 

  • A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people

  • Advanced degree preferred

  • Experience with standards-based curriculum and assessment practices
