Job Description/Responsibilities:
The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to roughly 500 students in grades 6 through 12, including 80 international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory. The Northwest School seeks a full time Spanish Teacher who will teach 3 courses of Spanish language and who will lead the Modern Languages department as the department chair. The Modern Languages department at The Northwest School follows ACTFL standards and seeks a teacher familiar with applying ACTFL in a block schedule setting.

Department Chairs at The Northwest School are responsible for assisting the Academic Coordinating Team (ACT: Head of School, Assistant Head of School, Middle and Upper School Directors) in ensuring and monitoring the excellence of the curriculum and teaching effectiveness throughout their departments, and in encouraging and supporting strong and appropriate interdisciplinary education within their departments and within the overall curriculum.

Certification Required: No
Minimum Experience: 5-7 Years

Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school’s mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
A master’s degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
Experience in and commitment to teaching in the target language.
Demonstrated success with culturally responsive pedagogy.
Experience teaching a diverse student body through a social justice lens.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching French in addition to Spanish is preferred.
Native or near-native fluency in Spanish is preferred.
Demonstrated success applying ACTFL standards in a block schedule.
Experience with Latin American culture is highly preferred.
Scholarship in Hispanic Studies is highly preferred.
