Job Description/Responsibilities:
Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school serving students throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs. Committed to academic excellence, ethical learning, and progressive education, ECFS offers a rich and challenging curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of 1,700+ students from PreK to 12th grade on two campuses--one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan. The middle school, located in the Bronx, is comprised of approximately 400 students and 60 faculty members.

Fieldston Middle School seeks an Assistant Principal for Student Life beginning in July 2018. The successful candidate will join an administrative team that includes the MS Principal and the Assistant Principal for Academic Life. This 12-month position reports directly to the Principal.

The MS is entering its eleventh year as a 6-8th grade division and is seeking a leader in the role of the AP for Student Life who is passionate about co-creating an environment where the whole child and a growth mindset are priorities and who has demonstrated both understanding and support of students from diverse backgrounds. The successful candidate will help shape the MS advisory program and examine opportunities for developing a robust service learning component in the middle school. The AP for Student Life also oversees many aspects of the student life experience in the Middle School and partners with multiple constituencies of the school to operationalize the school’s progressive and social justice-oriented mission. The AP works to foster the intellectual, social, emotional, ethical, physical, and artistic development of all students in Fieldston Middle School.

The responsibilities of the AP for Student Life include:

Providing direct support and supervision to the division’s three Grade Level Deans
Providing training, support, and on-boarding of new advisors into the role
Coordinating the orientation of new students and planning parent conferences and other grade-wide activities
Coordinating weekly Middle School Town Hall meetings
Partnering with the Principal, the AP for Academic Life, and MS Diversity Coordinators to support student initiatives and other programs relating to diversity, equity, inclusion, and multicultural education.
Coordinating the 5-6th Grade student transition process for rising 6th graders entering the MS
Coordinating and implementing the student behavioral policy to maintain discipline for the division
Together with Grade Level Deans, meeting monthly with Parent Grade Chairs to arrange special family events and serving as a liaison between parents and school personnel in arranging those events
Collaborating with the Learning Center faculty, the MS Diversity Coordinators, and the counselor, psychologists, and nurses to support students
Supporting teachers in building positive relationships with parents and students
Regularly representing the Middle School at parent and other evening gatherings; this includes coordinating and presenting at those events, as appropriate
Serving on the MS Admissions Committee; interviewing students and families, as needed
Serving as Middle School liaison with the security and facilities department regarding MS safety & evacuation protocols
Participating in the faculty hiring process
Along with the Principal and AP for Academic Life, supervising and evaluating members of the MS faculty annually
Undertaking other duties as assigned by the Principal to address divisional priorities

Has extensive knowledge and understanding of the social-emotional development of early adolescents as well as experience and training in working with a diverse student population; knowledge and background in multicultural education, identity development theory, and culturally relevant pedagogy and practices.
Has knowledge and demonstrated leadership with the development and coordination of co-curricular and student programming.
Is committed to and has demonstrated experience in creating and nurturing an inclusive and diverse learning environment to support the development of the whole child.
Exhibits a positive, flexible, and professional approach to working with various school constituencies including faculty, students, parents, and school staff.
Possesses excellent strategic and problem-solving skills and exhibits a high level of emotional intelligence, an important combination in working with young people and colleagues in a dynamic middle school.
Has a demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning and a willingness to take intellectual risks, ask questions; is open to and welcoming of feedback, and is comfortable having candid conversations in offering professional feedback to colleagues.
Has had experience with supervision, evaluation, and support of faculty and knowledge of different approaches to supervision and evaluation, including the Charlotte Danielson framework.
Has exemplary organizational skills, the ability to establish and manage multiple priorities, and the ability to work under pressure.
Can work independently with diverse constituents while maintaining high professional standards.
Is flexible, patient, and has a sense of humor.

Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree or higher preferred in educational leadership, human development, social work, or counseling
A minimum of 8 years of distinguished classroom teaching experience, preferably with middle school students
A minimum of 3 years of previous leadership experience
Technology proficiency, including familiarity with Smartboards and Google platform and apps
Strong written and oral communication skills
